What The Bible Says About Debt

Perhaps the reason we have become a nation of debtors is that we have ignored the basic foundational spiritual principles of life. Yes, many in our country call themselves people of faith, of one persuasion or another, but, nonetheless we are a nation of debt slaves. Make no mistake, once you carry a burden of debt, you are not your own. Check out this scripture from proverbs 22-7: “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”

Is all debt bad? No. Few of us would be homeowners were it not for mortgage instruments. What might be considered bad debt is that which was purchased for the sole purpose of responding to a TV ad. Purchasing something simply because we want it, not because we need it. When we are buried in debt we cannot be in a position to help anyone. If the debt situation has become oppressive, then we may not even be able to have a restful sleep, and our health will become affected. It is no surprise that the bible speaks about money over three thousand times. So, having the right view about it must be very important.

If you are in debt and ever hope to be out of it, and able to lead a life with the contentment that the bible speaks about: Godliness with Contentment is Great Gain. You need to take a deep breath and step back and think. If you are still thinking the best way out of debt is to get rich, or win the lottery, You should probably stop reading this article.
